Achieve impact by exploring the practices, processes, and frameworks of Māori ways of seeing, knowing and being.

The Te Ao Maori and impact module aims to support all those involved in the science and research we deliver to better understand and incorporate Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori in meaningful ways to maximise impact.
iPEN want to actively support our scientists, researchers, and other stakeholder in our collective efforts in this area, and so is working with and supporting those who have a lead role in developing our capability in this area. We have developed a relationship with Te Ara Pūtaiao, the pan-CRI Māori Leadership Group and will continue to support and engage where they see we can add value.
Because iPEN is taking a supporting rather than a leading role in this area, we don't yet have a training on this area. However there are still a range of valuable resources that we strongly encourage our scientists to read, to continue to build our growing capability in this area. These are listed below.
If you'd like to find out more or how to get further support or advice, reach out to your XXX in your CRI, or alternatively get in touch and your iPEN rep can link you up.

Key resources

The following resources are considered 'must reads' by the iPEN team and our advisors and partners.

Vision Mātauranga is MBIE's key guiding policy document to support the integration of Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori into the RS&I sector.
By embedding this across all priority investment areas, MBIE seeks to realise the vision of unlocking the science and innovation potential of Māori knowledge, resources, and people.
All scientists and researchers should be familiar with this document.
Vision Mātauranga
"unlocking the science innovation and potential of Māori knowledge, resources and people".

A guide to Vision Mātauranga. Lessons from Māori Voices in the New Zealand Science Sector.
This guide, produced by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence) jointly with their partners, describes the good practice principles for embedding Vision Mātaranga.
It is broken into three sections, the first is written specifically for Māori researchers, the second is for all researchers, and the third is targeted to government agencies and research organisations.

A Tiriti-led science policy approach for Aotearoa New Zealand.
This paper, also produced by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, describes a range of key considerations our scientists and researchers need to understand when it come to giving effect to Te Tiriti in our work.
Although the title is focused on science policy, the considerations described are equally applicable to how we do our science and research. It explains the relevance of Mātauranga Māori for understanding and addressing some of the challenges and dilemmas we are facing, and outlines how this can be leveraged for the benefit of all.
The paper also discusses how  perpetuating the historical  inequities through the appropriate of Māori knowledge can be avoided, and discusses how Māori voices and knowledge can instead be elevated in ways that give effect to Te Tiriti.

Other resources

There are large number of publication and other resources available on the web that our scientists and researchers can draw upon. Here are a small number of sites that we think might be useful - but don't be constrained by these, and if you find others you think could be shared by iPEN get in touch here!

Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga, as New Zealand's Centre of Māori Research Excellence is a fantastic place to explore research that has been undertaken by and for Māori. They also produce a range of other resources and guides (such as those above) and share other news that is relevant to our scientists and researchers.

The Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao has this great introduction to Mātauranga Māori and science. Our members have all found this site a great '101' starting place to build (or refresh) our understanding on the linkage between the two.
